The calf-busting walk from Bath centre to Combe Down proves totally worth it…

In brief

Just 1.5 miles from the city centre, Combe Down gives you the best of both world’s – a short tumble down Prior Park Road and you’re in town and easy access to the countryside and beautiful villages such as Monkton Combe (with it’s delightful pub with rooms, The Wheelwright Arms) and South Stoke (also home to an amazing pub with a gorgeous community-owned back story, The Packhorse).

Families love it here thanks to the good primary (Combe Down Primary School) and  proximity to secondary schools (Ralph Allen SchoolHayesfield Girls’ School & Beechen Cliff), sports clubs (like Combe Down RFC), play park, huge Sainsbury’s supermarket on the doorstep, the fab local Darling Deli AND a top notch fish ‘n’ chip shop.

Things to do

For fresh air hit the park, head to the dramatic grounds of National Trust property Prior Park Landscape Garden or explore the amazing Rainbow Woods where you’ll find a rope swing, a den building area and a fairy door trail. We can’t promise the fairies will be in but it’s always worth knocking! Park on Claverton Down Road opposite the Sulis Club.

Look out for…

One-year old community hub in the Mulberry Park housing development, where there’s a sparkling cafe (with cheap but delicious coffee!) plus classes and events.

The summer fair, held each year on Firs Field in the heart of the village where bouncy castles, coconut shies and candy floss will keep the kids entertained. Luckily there’s usually a bar for the adults.

The kids will love…

Climbing aboard the pirate ship in the play park, or causing havoc at the village’s weekly toddler group while you have a cuppa.

Grown ups will love…

Combe Down Garage with it’s great reputation (we never imagined we’d be so excited by a good garage, that’s getting old for ya) and the super-cosy Forester & Flower pub.
