Where are you based and what do you do?

I am a birth and postnatal doula covering Bath and the surrounding area.

What inspired you to start your business?

I previously worked in care, for the NHS, The Priory and schools in various councils.  But I knew I wasn’t working in quite the right area of support for me. I had my twinks and knew there was more that women needed as they journey into motherhood, and I found the wonderful world of doulaing.  Working one to one with people is what I have always enjoyed, getting to know each other, building a relationship of trust, acceptance and empowerment. Being a doula is what I was meant to do and I love it.

What do you love about running a business in Bath?

Bath is such a beautifully small city that it makes connecting with other business owners and supporting each other easier.  There is also a well-established doula community in Bath, which is great for understanding and empathy, teamwork, development and a good old doula cuddle!

You’ve got five minutes to grab a sandwich, where do you go?

I’m not a fan of sandwiches but I love a good juice.  So when I’ve got no time but need a boost I head to Beyond the Kale for a super juice, usually a green one.  They are fresh, energising, healthy and delicious. Just perfect.

Where’s your favourite place to book for a business lunch?

If I am meeting a fellow doula for a bit of a catch up, debrief and some genuine doula love, I like to go to the Chelsea Café, on the Chelsea Road.  If it’s nice we can sit outside, its handy if either of us are on call or volunteering for the RUH, plus the cakes are delicious. Cake is lunch, right?!

Which bar do you head to after a tough day?

Well, in all honesty I am quite a home bird when it comes to the evenings.  But for both my hubby and I, Honey’s Stoney Bonk hits the nail on the head after a tough day.  Its real cider and ginger beer, made in Midford just outside Bath. Stoney Bonk is perfect in the summer with a BBQ or in the winter with a big bowl of chilli, you can even warm it up as an alternative to mulled wine.

Tell us about another Bath business you love and why?

I love Honest Studio, a graphic design studio based in Bath, full of good, honest design ideas.  They crafted my brand identity and website design, giving me a professional and individual identity, that captures my personality, ethos and business.  The guys were great fun to work with and just got me!

What advice would you give to someone starting a business in the city?

Go for it! There is so much support and genuine kindness amongst local businesses you will not be alone.  So my advice would be to find, connect, and meet up with other locals business owners, so they can hold your hand along the scary but exciting journey ahead of you.
