The gorgeous Charlotte from BYM Fitness let’s us into a little secret…

I recently had a group of girlfriends over for a girlie get together. With all the tidying up, food preparation and generally trying to get ready whilst also running around after my two very energetic kids I was, unsurprisingly, beginning to experience slightly raised ‘stress’ levels.

Once everyone had arrived and with fizz in hands we all began to do what we do best; LAUGH!

I’m not just taking about a polite, lady-like giggle, I mean the type of laugh that makes it hard to breathe. Laughing which goes on and on, brings tears to eyes and then you realise you’ve laughed so hard and for so long you can’t even remember what it was that made you start in the first place. Almost immediately the stress and tension of the hours leading up to that point dissolved and my mood was lifted for the remainder of the day, much to my delight and that of my husband & children!

Who likes a grumpy mum and wife?

It reinforced something I and you both know; Laughter really is the best medicine!

It’s not only that it releases a free and unlimited supply of mood boosting endorphins which really lift our spirits, it’s also because the physical exertion of laughter can actually relax the muscles in the body making you feel more at ease, therefore bringing people closer together.

A room full of people can be joined together by laughter and it’s something we are ALL capable of.

I found an interesting list of benefits to illustrate just how amazing laughter really is:

Physical Health Benefits

  • Boosts immunity
  • Lowers stress hormones
  • Decreases pain
  • Relaxes muscles
  • Prevents heart disease

Mental Health Benefits

  • Adds joy and zest to life
  • Eases anxiety and fear
  • Relieves stress
  • Improves mood
  • Enhances resilience

Social Benefits

  • Strengthens relationships
  • Attracts others to us
  • Enhances teamwork
  • Helps diffuse conflict
  • Promotes group bonding

If you are having a bad day, stress levels are rising or you’re just suck in a mood slump give it a try, do whatever you can to make yourself smile, giggle and laugh.  Stick on an old episode of Friends, play games with the kids or simply pick up the phone and chat to or meet up with friends. Observe the instant effects laughter will have not only on your mood but the physical changes to your body too.

Keep laughing and be happy and healthy!
