This week’s ‘Businesses of Bath’ feature is from a wonderful lady called Allie Astell who owns the Bath based company ‘Manage my Website.’

Where are you based and what do you do?

We’re based on Walcot Street in Bath and I’m a web designer, specialising in a platform called Squarespace. I also run workshops to create and build your own website in a day. Most of our clients are start-ups and small businesses but we’ve also built sites for councils, large companies in London, non-profits and premier league footballers. I love the variety of my work!

What inspired you to start your business?

I’ve always been quite creative. Back in 2009 I decided I wanted to help people to maintain their websites (whatever the platform) so that I could learn about web design as I went along. A friend casually asked if I’d heard of a relatively new, unknown platform called Squarespace. Curious, I built my own site, and built up a strong team of freelancers to help me. Since then the Manage My Website team and I have created hundreds more!

What do you love about running a business in Bath?

Clients are very happy to come to meetings here as it’s so lovely. There are plenty of gorgeous places to choose from, and after the meetings they spend the rest of the day mooching around. I find it a very creative, inspiring city and everyone’s very supportive.

You’ve got five minutes to grab a sandwich, where do you go?

So we all adore the almond croissants at the Bertinet Bakery on New Bond Street Place, it’s a regular pit stop for us. We also get these for our Squarespace Workshops held monthly at The Guild, they’re a much-loved favourite and we get great feedback about them as well as the course! I like to think that almonds are protein, so surely they can’t be bad for you? 😉 Bravo Bertinet!

Where’s your favourite place to book for a business lunch?

We love working from and meeting clients at the Walcot Cafe. Our desk space is opposite so it’s convenient, super friendly, with awesome smoothies, fresh, healthy lunch options and amazing coffee!

Which bar do you head to after a tough day?

We have been known to stop off and stay a bit longer than planned in the lovely, newly refurbished The Claremont on Camden. The staff are great fun, and it’s been done up beautifully inside and out. They serve great pizzas and have a good selection of gins and beers! What’s not to love? 🙂

Tell us about another Bath business you love and why?

We share an office space with Paul O’Connor Photography, he is an old friend of mine and a fantastic photographer who’s worked on huge ad campaigns for lots of household names. Paul kindly makes time to take photos for our workshops. He’s a great guy and we absolutely love his work! Big shout out to Paul!

What advice would you give to someone starting a business in the city?

To help and support other local businesses as much as you can through social media and referrals, plus socialise and network with relevant people. Aim to make your customers and staff raving fans – go above and beyond!

Thanks Allie! If you’d like to know more about building a website then there is still time to book onto the next Manage my Website course this week! Simply head here for more details.
