This week we visit amazing local business Rock the Tots  and speak to owner Steph Mitchell about the gigs she performs for the little ones!

Where are you based and what do you do?

I live in Corsham, about 20 mins from Bath, but our business takes us across Bath, Bristol and the West Country.

I run Rock The Tots – Gigs for little people… and their grown-ups! It’s a fun and fabulous music event for the Under 5s (and their adults). Each gig hosts a fun theme, with a live guitarist performing upbeat covers for all to enjoy. We also include puppets, percussion and stories. We have gigs at New Oriel Hall and Odd Down Sports Ground in the coming months.

What inspired you to start your business?

My husband and I are both performers, and Craig has run a function band for 15 years. When our own children came along, we had a lightbulb moment – Wouldn’t it be great if you could see some live music with your baby where there isn’t a nursery rhyme in sight!

What do you love about running a business in Bath?

Bath is full of friendly folk. Everyone we’ve dealt with has been warm, positive and helpful. The peeps who run our venues are just super, and so encouraging of our relatively new venture. And the families who come to our events are divine. Bath audiences like to groove!

You’ve got five minutes to grab a sandwich, where do you go?

If I’m in central Bath I’ll head usually head to Picnic Coffee on Saracen St. It’s great for a caffeine and cake fix too. If I’m closer to my own neck of the woods, I love The Birdhouse Café in Box. Their fresh salads are amazing.

Where’s your favourite place to book for a business lunch?

I’ve not done many of these to be honest! But I love The Italian Food Hall, where everything is delicious.

Which bar do you head to after a tough day?

Sub13 on George St do a mean Mojito.

Tell us about another Bath business you love and why?

That’s so hard as there are so many! To plug another music venture, Music for Miniatures is great. Their classical concerts for little ones are inspiring, and like us at Rock The Tots, they are all about introducing young’uns to live music.

Otherwise, I love Yogamagic who run creative yoga and mindfulness classes for children.

Oh, and I’d be a fool not to mention my husband’s BRILLIANT function band, Funk City

What advice would you give to someone starting a business in the city?

You can spend ages trying to make sure everything is ‘perfect’, but at some point you have to take that leap of faith. Fear and apathy are the biggest hurdles I think, and so my advice would be to just go for it. Also, everyone we have dealt with in Bath is hugely positive, and there is a real sense of comradery and a willingness to help each other. So connect with other small businesses too, as it helps to keep up courage and momentum. Oh, and if you have a pile of invoices and emails to get through, make sure you put on a banging playlist!

Fancy heading to a Rock the Tots gig? Well you’re in luck, they’ve just taken on a new venue in Bath at Odd Down Sports Ground and their first gig is on the 15th April… and they’ll be rocking out to a Space theme! For more info head over to their website.
